That night it was late when Logan got home, but Anna had been able to verify that he was, in fact, working on a late report with a few members of the engineering board. Kazuo had had one of his good days and wanted to take advantage of it, so the rest of the meeting had stayed for as long as the man had strength.

She heard him come in, and he even put an arm around her as they slept, but by the time she woke up in the morning, he was gone again.

Their lunch that day was put aside as well, since one of the Initiative members had broken the arm of another that morning on purpose. The council had never established legal parameters for assault between the colonists, and it had taken a special session to get things settled. The man’s trial took place over lunch, which put Anna and Logan in the same room, just not to socialize. The man was sentenced by Anna and her colleagues in accordance with what they thought was fair, and everyone was exhausted by the end of the day.

Anna was still, somehow, home before Logan, even though she had to meet with her colleagues after the sentencing. She knew she was supposed to be with Orion for a week starting the next day, but she felt short-changed. He didn’t seem to be in a hurry to spend time with her on their last night together for a week. She felt a little crazy, angrier than usual and wanting to cry at the same time. It was probably just hormones. Anna packed a few things in a bag in preparation for the upcoming week and sat down to read a little to clear her mind.

Next she knew, she was waking up to the sound of Logan’s boots through the doorway. When she looked at her communicator, she realized it was late.

Orion was never this flaky.

“You decided to come home from work after all?”

Logan hadn’t expected her to be home when he got there, but he put his bag down before he set about getting rid of his coat. “I brought work home with me, actually. Permutations of interpersonal criminality. Should make for a fantastic few days of work, all thanks to Mr. Geller’s temper.” He took off his boots off by the door and tossed them into a corner rather than lining them up. Being exact about things like that didn’t matter. Not when so much else was going wrong with the world.

Anna walked over and lined his boots for him and looked over at him again. “I have hardly seen you at all. I doubt you would have noticed if I wasn’t home yesterday or today.”

“I would’ve noticed.” He didn’t even look at her directly. At least not at first. When he did, she could see the same fatigue in his eyes that she fought, though he didn’t look away. “You were great today. I know you said when they first put you on the Judiciary that they made a mistake, but they didn’t.
